Letting people in

I've been hurt and confused by someone recently, someone who means a lot to me and who has been significant in my life. When I shared this with my sister, she said "Experiences like that make us not want to let people in our world." It's so true. It's hard for me to think that I won't get hurt the next time. So I get caught in a whirlwind: I want to be connected to someone but the fear of getting hurt again makes me apprehenisve and not reach out, leading me back to feeling alone in this world. A good friend of mine gave me this poem:

Rumi says: If you want what visible reality can give, you're an employee. If you want the unseen world, you're not living your truth. Both wishes are foolish, but you'll be forgiven for forgetting that what you really want is love's confusing joy.

It's nice to think we're forgiven, but what are we supposed to do-live our truth and yet be an employee, or reach for more but not do our duty?
